The main contents of this
bibliography have been divided into eight sections for ease of reference. These
sections are:
Introductory and general references. Books and other sources which give an introduction to the subject or which provide a general review of survival.
Direct research. An outline of the major sources reporting research which directly supports survival.
Indirect research. Scientific research which, although not concerned directly with survival, nevertheless strongly supports the belief in survival.
a. Reincarnation research.
b. Research into Near Death Experiences.
c. Research into Past-Life Regression. The personal experiences and writings of seers and mystics. There have always been individuals who appear able to contact other levels of consciousness and published accounts of four of the better known of these individuals will be reviewed.
Experiences of sensitives and mediums. Published accounts of experiences which, although not specifically research, have provided detailed accounts of what may occur during and after death.
Experiences of doctors, scientists and others who are involved in the study of death and dying. This material can come from a wide range of cultures and from all ages.
Published personal experiences of ordinary individuals.
The survival of pets and other animals.
The core of each section consists
of a series of books or reports, the references to which are given in as much
detail as possible to enable those interested to track down the publication.
For example, where available ISBN numbers are included and where older books
have been recently reprinted details may be given of both originals and
reprints. However, for a variety of reasons, not all books quoted may have full
details cited. Usually a short description of the contents is given for each
book and this may include (marked out with inverted commas) some of the
descriptive material originally supplied by the publishers, or from subsequent
reviews - where this gives a realistic description of the contents. In the case
of some of the more important sources, a more detailed description is given and
the continuity of each section is maintained by a general commentary added
where appropriate. In order to help those who feel unable to ‘wade through’ the
fairly extensive list of books covered in the bibliography, a short reading
list is included at the end of the main section. This list includes a few books
which can be considered as ‘essential reading’ - or as a straightforward
introduction to the subject.
The final section of the
bibliography consists of a general discussion of the subject of the survival of
death as described in the published materials which have been considered,
followed by personal conclusions. That is conclusions which are personal to the
author since, in the final analysis, every individual considering the question
of survival has to make a personal decision about which way to interpret the
evidence and whether or not they accept the idea of survival.
